§ 01 — Construction

Terry cloth is one weave wearing two faces.

Every bath towel starts as three sets of yarn on a loom: a ground warp and weft that hold the cloth together in a tight, flat weave, and a second warp — held slack — that the loom pushes up into loops as it weaves. Those loops, called the pile, are what you actually touch. Left uncut, you get terry cloth. Sheared flat on one side, you get velour.

More pile means more yarn surface in contact with your skin and more space to trap water — which is why pile height and pile density matter more to how a towel feels than almost anything printed on its label.

§ 02 — Density

GSM tells you how much cloth you're holding — not how good it is.

GSM (grams per square metre) is the industry's shorthand for density: weigh one square metre of the fabric, and that number is its GSM. It correlates loosely with plushness and absorbency because a denser weave usually means more loops per square inch — but a low-twist, long-staple towel at 500 g/m² can outperform a tightly twisted one at 700 g/m². Treat GSM as a starting point, not a verdict.

Approximate bands used across the industry — mills vary, and a well-made towel can sit lower than expected and still feel dense. Beach and banhão styles skew heavier because the extra size is meant to fully wrap an adult, wet, without dragging.

§ 03 — Fiber

The fiber decides what the weave can't.

Cotton is hollow at the core, which is part of why it absorbs so readily — the fiber itself can hold water, not just the spaces between threads. But not all cotton behaves the same way once it's spun into yarn. The length of the individual fiber, called staple length, and how tightly it's twisted, decide how soft a towel feels new and how it ages.

Combed cotton

Shorter fibers are combed out before spinning, leaving a smoother, stronger yarn than untreated carded cotton.

Pima & Supima

Extra-long-staple American cotton. Fewer fiber ends exposed means less pilling and a softness that builds with washing.

Egyptian cotton

staple ≈ 35–44mm

Grown along the Nile, prized for the longest common staple lengths — the benchmark for strength-to-softness ratio.

Turkish cotton

Medium-to-long staple grown in the Aegean basin. Slightly coarser than Egyptian, but famously fluffy and durable.

Zero-twist yarn

Fibers are barely spun before weaving, so loops stay lofted and cloud-soft — at some cost to long-term durability.

§ 04 — Performance

Why a towel drinks water instead of pushing it around.

Two things are happening at once. Cotton fiber is chemically hydrophilic — its cellulose structure attracts water molecules and can hold roughly 20–25 times its own weight once fully wetted. And the loop pile multiplies surface area, drawing water upward through the yarn by capillary action, the same effect that pulls ink up a paper towel.

Twist works against this slightly: a tightly twisted loop packs fibers closer together, which is more durable but leaves less open structure for water to travel through. It's the same trade-off that shows up between "plush" and "fast-drying" towels.

The taller the loop and the more open its twist, the further water can travel up the fiber before it saturates.

§ 05 — Format

Where the banhão actually sits in the towel family.

Banhão is Brazilian shorthand — roughly "big bath towel" — for a format sized to wrap fully around an adult body rather than just cover it. It sits above the standard bath towel and, depending on the mill, blurs into what English-language labels call a bath sheet. There's no single global standard for any of these names, so dimensions below are typical ranges, not fixed rules.

The jump from a standard bath towel to a banhão is rarely subtle — mills usually add both length and width, since the point is full coverage in one wrap, not just a bit more fabric.

§ 06 — Longevity

What actually shortens — or extends — a towel's life.

Towels don't fail suddenly; they lose absorbency gradually, usually well before the fabric itself wears out. Most of that decline traces back to residue building up inside the fiber rather than the fiber breaking down.

Warm, not hot

Hot water accelerates dye fading and fiber fatigue over dozens of cycles. Warm water cleans just as well.

Skip the fabric softener

Softener coats fibers in a waxy film that blocks the very capillary action that makes a towel absorbent.

Tumble dry, low heat

Low heat fluffs the pile back up; high heat is the fastest route to brittle, matted loops.

Sun sparingly

Fine for white or undyed towels; direct sun will fade a colored banhão faster than the washer ever will.

§ 07 — Reference

GSM
Grams per square metre — the standard measure of fabric density.
Staple length
The length of an individual cotton fiber before spinning; longer generally means softer and more durable.
Ring-spun
Yarn twisted and thinned in a way that produces a smoother, stronger thread than basic open-end spinning.
Zero-twist
Yarn spun with almost no twist, leaving loops lofted and unusually soft, at some cost to durability.
Dobby border
The flat-woven decorative strip at each end, added by a secondary loom mechanism; also reduces fraying.
Combed cotton
Cotton processed to remove short fibers and debris before spinning, for a cleaner, stronger yarn.
OEKO-TEX
An independent certification confirming a textile was tested for harmful substances.
Banhão
Brazilian term for an oversized bath towel built to wrap fully around an adult body.
